    Portable Hammock Stand from Pipe

Rather than wait to post this 'perfectly' I decided that I'd just get something posted. So, you see my messy apartment and pictures taken with my IPhone.

I commissioned one of the machinists at work to make this for me. He still won't tell me how much I owe him. It's made form 1" conduit with fencing top rail used to make sleeves for the pipe to slip into so that no one piece is too long to fit into my Jeep crossways. I mentioned in another thread that the specs were a bit misunderstood. This thing is totally sturdy, but a bit heavier than I wanted. However, it works for car camping and setting up at home. I will need to really pad the top of the eyebolts in order to stretch a tarp over it when using it outside, which I admit I haven't done yet.

My TrekLight hammock is most comfortable strung kind of tight on this, which puts the hammock so high up that I need a step stool to get into it. I'll be testing my BB on it tonight and through the weekend since I will have company that I'll let have my usual bed. She has mentioned she may want to sleep in the hammock, though, so who knows.

    So, here are the pictures:

pity, he ground off the welds. Looks like Aluminum, but that's ridiculously expensive so I'll guess galvanized? can't tell from the pics.

The pipe is 1" conduit, galvanized I believe but I'll ask tomorrow. The sleeves are chain link fencing top rail, again galvanized I believe. Why is it a pity he ground off the welds? Just curious.

The BB does seem to fit the stand better than the TrekLight double. I do wish it was light enough and short enough to fly with. I would like to take it when I go back to Nashville to visit and if/when I get a job overseas. At this point, though, it's pretty much just a car camp and sleep in at home stand.

I like the idea of sleeves, instead of threading.

Is the stand long enough to hang your tarp between the eye-bolts, rather than drape over the top?

I can't figure out how to hang the hammock if I use the eye bolts for the tarp. And, no, it's really not long enough at approx. 10' long. If I hang the tarp from the eye bolts I'd have to wrap the hammock straps around the legs, and that would probably get them wetter closer to the hammock than would be good. I really haven't played with a tarp on it yet.

I should also mention that with the sleeves setting it up is tricky with one person. I have to hold the opposite leg that I'm slipping the new section on so that what I've slipped on it already doesn't fall out. I usually use my knee. And moving it after set up is a slow process so the legs don't fall off. But, minor details compared to not having a stand to use in campgrounds that don't have trees.

Just cause it's my trade and I like to admire others' skill. Plus if it's unfinished I can tell what welder hes using and prolly what material. Just being myself which I guess I'm a weirdo.

This may be hard to interpret over the net, but you could drill a hole through the sleeve and the female pole and insert a large cotter pin. easy in easy out. your buddy should be able to do it for you.

The cotter pin was what I was thinking of, but as I said, the specs got a bit misinterpreted. He was going off his experience making a custom canvas tent frame for his hunting camp. Since he won't even tell me what I owe him, I don't want to ask for more mods at this point. Or, maybe that's what he is waiting for.
