By that time there should be no skeeters and less of the pesky humans.

the bear track next to my hand in my avatar is from the beach at a campsite on Lake Lila, between Little Tupper and Low's.
There was a father and son I ran into they started from Lake Lila, Portaged 3.5 miles and were almost done. That is also a nice trip but the canoe carry was not well traveled or marked.

In the Fall I hope. Any place is good. Vermont in the Fall is great.

Looks like a great place and a good time!

You're making me anxious to get my kayak out for a multi-day trip.

    Thanks, HY

Nice report on a great area. You're giving me short timers syndrome.
Will be up on Big Moose Lake on Aug. 7-14. I can't wait.

Five of us did the same trip a couple of years ago. We stayed for five or six days. It's a beautiful area and some of the camp sites are spectacular. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

well, i'd have given you this one... it was early july, 2009, at campsite 20, iirc (one of the 20s in any case, just east of what i think is deer island.)

brother bear entered our campsite from the water (southwest) side at about 11.30 pm. we drove him off with shouts, sticks, and rocks. he came back, this time from the land side (east) around 1 am. we drove him off again, probably following him about 1/4 mile into the woods, driving him east. based on his track size (seen in the morning) and the glimpse we got of him in the moonlight (THAT would have made a nice picture, but we didn't have the camera out), he was probably 3 feet high, had a 25" stride, and was about 300lbs. not too big. still, i stayed up all night tending a fire. he did not come back.

we reported it to some rangers we ran into the next day while exploring Mt Frederica. they said it was news to them, as the last bear they knew of in the area had been killed 3 years prior during the regular hunting season. they quizzed us on food storage, etc. said he was probably a young bear trying to establish his own territory. i'm certain he wasn't drawn by any food smell, as we are careful, had our stuff hung up, and he came from the water side, so he'd been walking along the shore. anyway, we survived, and my daughter has a great story to tell.
