If you're sing an UQ if some sort a quilt on top will wrap around everything but your head just fine. If it gets much below 50°, I just use some form a headgear whether that be a thin balaclava or my primaloft hood. I prefer to avoid using zippers if I can in my sleeping gear.

    Jmac...

I have a Montbell synthetic which I just love... except for the hood! I've always used it as a top quilt, even in tents. Knowing I will never go to ground again , I built up some courage and lopped the hood off and sewed the wound closed. If you inspect your Montbell jmac, you will see a logical place to cut and sew. Next I removed Velcro tabs by either cutting them off or just removing the stitching. Thirdly, I ran the draft tube cinch (with the toggle that's in the center of the bag if using as a quilt) and ran the end to the right side of the quilt so it doesn't hit me in the mouth anymore. I considered taking the zipper off but decided itt still has a use. The colors are a little interesting being half blue and half yellow but I love this bag so much I didn't want to stick it in the basement. And it IS soft and yummy on the inside ! I tried to take pics of my mods but my camera is hinky today. I'll try again if you need more clarification. I highly recommend modding the Montbell!

    I prefer sleeping bags actually.

In the Summer I use a full length center zip Exped Wall Creeper. It makes adjusting for heat quite easy.

In the Winter I use a Mountain Hardwear Ultra Lamina 15 degree.
If there's two ways to take my comments, assume it's the lighter and funnier of the two.

I still use my WM Summerlite mummybag as a topquilt. Been using it as a topquilt since I started hammocking a few years ago. You can fold the hood under if it gets in your way. I like the hood when I'm chilled and want to hunker down under the bag.

The full zip allows it to open up as a topquilt when I want. Or I can use it like a traditional mummy bag, which does take a little bit of acrobatic skill in a hammock, but you get there eventually. My mummy bag has horizontal baffles like the Jack quilts. I can shake most of the down so it's on top of me for the most warmth and then I can still zip the bag up so I don't have to keep retucking it through the night when I move around like I do with a topquilt.

TQ ( top quilts) are slicker than sleeping bags, but that said, I wouldn't have bought a TQ if I already owned a sleeping bag worth carrying.

That is my problem currently, I love my sleeping bag but it doesn't compress down enough to be used other than car camping..

I'm another who zips into his sleeping bag in the hammock. I just feel that I move around too much to be successful with a TQ. I do use an UQ or pad tho when it's below 40, anywhere above 40 and I'm good with just the sleeping bag.

It's not easy for a guy my size (6'-3" 225ish pounds) to zip into a Eureka Casper backpacking sleeping bag, but the bonus is that by the time I get done I'm nice and warmed up!

I tried the MB last night as a top quilt with just my feet in the zippered part. Worked very well. I did not have a problem with the hood in my face and I too love the feel of the soft MB bag.

    Thanks,
    John

I have been using a military poncho liner as top quilt long before I knew that was the technical term for what it was being used as. Used it when camping with my sons scout troop in a "gasp" tent or a lean to and with my hammock.

Of course it is not warm enough for cold weather but that is what sleeping bags are for.

Is the word "tent" considered a four letter word on this forum ?
