    Hammock Camping with Dog?

I backpack with my German Shepherd (about 55 pounds). Mosquitoes in the summer Sierra are thick and fierce, and I have been ground camping in a tarp tent to give her bug protection at night. After a miserable couple of nights spent sleeping on a too thin mattress and yearning for my Blackbird, I wonder if there is a way to sleep in my WBBB and still not leave my buddy unprotected on the ground to be chewed to death. Any advice would be welcome.

ThermaCell works wonders for the bugs in the woods of Wisconsin. It needs to be changed every four hours though. I believe K9 Advantix contains permitherin. Those may help.

Do a quick search for hiking or camping with dogs and you'll get several threads...such as this recent one:

Kyjen Dog Tent... heavier than I'd like, but not nearly as heavy as the REI dog tent which also isn't fully enclosed. If you can't let him into your hammock with you this is probably your second best option against the bugs and weather. Also, if he doesn't mind or won't go crazy when he sees things, then maybe just a mosquito net tent would work too. Since my dog will go crazy at any sound or small animal, I like that I can fully enclose her from the temptation.

Herbalist, my ridgeback carries his own tent. I use some straps to attach it to his pack and he does just fine with the weight.

I've wondered if ENO's Underbelly Gear Sling would work for a dog: http://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/underbelly.html

Doesn't say how much weight it holds but does say in a pinch it can sleep your buddy.

Maybe the WB bug net would work with a slight modification? You (or Brandon could work with you when he gets back) would need to lengthen it a bit from top to bottom and he could sleep on the ground below you inside the net?

Sorry to Hijack, but I'm proud. I just picked up my future hiking buddy Saturday. Patch the Aussie!
