    Bottom insulation for Clarks

I have a NX-250 on the way, and was wondering about insulation for this fall.

I currently have the UNderCover and UnderPad for my Hennessey, but I was considering an underquilt for both the HH and the CJH. What I was wondering was if anyone made use of Clark's pockets as holders for individual "pillows" of insulation (either synthetic or down) rather than use an UQ?

It seems to me that an UQ would offer more even insulation, but I am open to any and all ideas.

I have to use an under quilt because the pockets on my tropical are spaced way differently than the pockets on your NA. If you're gonna be using both the HH and the Clark, see if you can't DIY make one quilt that can be used for both of them. I've even sewn ties (small strings) onto the edges of my hammock and the matching ties onto my under quilt so I can have the quilt fitted better to my hammock. And yes, I was holding my breath while sewing something directly onto my Clark but it's made my sleep system work so much better.

Clark introduced pillows of down to stuff into the pockets to do exactly what you're talking about. That said, a normal UQ would work if you don't put anything heavy in the pockets.

I have the CJH NA Camo and I find that tying an Adventure Medical 2P Heat-Sheet to the outside is more than sufficient. When it's frigid I slide an automotive heat reflector between the two. Don't know how well it'll work for the NX 250. Have a few picks in my gallery and posted a thread on how to do this.

    Jsaults:
Look at the KAQ UQ's at Arrowhead Equipment. I have two of them (1-UQ, 1-TQ). These are perfect for my CJH NX-200. They even have sewn in attachment points that match up to the GG loops on the Clark plus one in the middle. Two mini-biners and two sections of shock-cord leaves no gaps on the sides. Look at my avatar and you will see the UQ rigged to my NX_200.

    Thanks RAW.

It appears that the wheel has already been invented!

Really like the looks of the down pillows, and great idea about mirroring the velcro for stability.

I have an old Eddie Bauer sewn-through liner bag that I was considering re-working into an underquilt. I could almost as easily re-work it into individual pillows. I guess I need to wait and see just how the pockets are situated before I make final plans.

Thanks all for the ideas and advice!

I am thinking about the NX-150. Needing a full 4 season thought the z-liner came with insulation to place in the pouches. Any knowledge on this. Love

Clark does not make it easy to find the Z-Liner

    on their website........

Looks like an interesting product. But at the moment I am leaning toward a 3/4 down underquilt that could be used with both my HH and the CJH. I like the idea of a compact pack size for down vs the bulkier size for the synthetic insulation.

Too many good solutions for this problem! I need to hit the lottery so I can order one of each manufaturer's products.

I have ordered The Z-liners, as I am gearing up for winter camping.

I like the idea that they are designed to work with the NX150.
Also the insulation is high tech, and the army is using the same stuff, apparently . . .

    From climashield.com

Engineered for maximum loft per unit weight, CLIMASHIELD HL is the perfect choice when you demand performance driven comfort that delivers superior thermal efficiency, resilient loft and durability.
CLIMASHIELD gives users all the softness and warmth of down with the hypoallergenic and durability advantages of continuous filament insulation. Even after repeated use and laundering, it maintains its original integrity.
    . . . excellent warmth when wet . . .
I am kinda excited to try it out

PS. 25 years ago when I lived in a tent for two years (even in -40)
I had a 30 yr old single mattress that I slept on
which was above ground on a metal strapping support system.
It was not designed for cold, just an old mattress.

I will be interested to see how I fair in the Hammock using this system.
