Glacier National Park

Anyone here spend any time in Glacier hanging? I have a trip planned the last week in July and can't get any information about the campsites that we will be staying in. Our itinerary is:

Lower Nyack
Upper Nyack
Old Man Lake
No Name Lake
Upper Two Medicine

Everyone else is bring tents (normally they would bring a hammock). I'd much rather hang than sleep on the ground although I am prepared to do so if needed.

If you mean Glacier Nat'l Park there was a thread about a month ago and on it Connie? did a great rundown on the park and hanging etc. I'll see if i can dig it up.

Glacier Natl Park is definitely on my list of "must see" places, so I'm looking forward to reading up more on it. So many great places to see, so little money for plane tickets

It is the centennial year for Glacier National Park so that it maybe a bit crowded. Early reservations may be necessary. Contact Park Headquarters and mention that you are doing a report for hammock forums and then be prepared for more information than you really want.

I was there in the summer a few years back and had a great time. The weather is cooler than you might expect.

We already have reservations, they were easy to get this far out. We asked about hammocking and they basically said it was allowed but would not or could not give information with regard to trees at each campsite. We were in Montana last year at this time and it was cooler then too. We are prepared for the weather.

I have stayed at private campgrounds on Highway 2.

I am not familiar with Lower Nyack and Upper Nyack campsites.

If you are talking about going across the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, up Nyack Creek past the Nyack Ranger Station there are trees, and brush over the trail giving meaning to wearing rain chaps because the elevation to be gained will make you sweat and the brush over-reaching the trail will soak your pants legs.

Rain chaps recommended: Exped or Full Moon Rain Chaps. DIY/MYOG tubes for legs and straps to attach at waistbelt.

The last time I was there, I was discouraged from going. I found trail maintenance was non-existent. The last time I was right there was 5 years ago.

If the "trail" is maintained more recently than 5 years ago, I would be surprised. Glacier National Park is not showing those old trails on their current maps. My maps are old. I do not have them with me, however.

Upper Two Medicine, No Name Lake and Old Man Lake campgrounds have trees. Trees good for hammocks, I am not certain. I haven't looked at trees that way, yet. I have just started looking at trees that way.

Temperature to expect: Summer is 40's at night, and can drop to 15-20 F with wind and rain storm. Snow any month of the entire year is possible, but not likely. The weather engine for Glacier National Park is the NOAA picture of the Gulf of Alaska Hi's-Lows and Moisture Content: count the number of days and we have it.

People here discuss sleeping bag ratings seriously, and argue if 20 or 15 F is "being prepared". The good news is you are not far from hiking out once you are near Two Medicine. There is a boat. Find out the schedule. If you have to walk around the lake that isn't bad, but no stragglers - keep your group tightly together. The north side, especially, has grizzly bears there very jealous of their prime feeding areas and that terrain is a prime feeding area for the grizzly bears.

With reported "sightings" the trail is closed: Not "sport".

In mid-July, you can see patches of snow: Not only glaciers and permanent snowfields.
