I wonder if this is an alternate configuration for a three strut tensegrity, which will hang a single hammock without stakes? Just let it tip over until the cross strut has one end on the ground. It might need to be set up asymmetrically, so that the top ends of the X struts are each at the same height when the three feet are on the ground.

+ Wow. Thanks for the Snelson link. As a former kitebuilder, I see free-floating applications, but I was looking for a way to ground it. I think Mac's idea would work. We were just waiting for an excuse to use parts that weren't all the same length (at least, I think so.)

So, if I am envisioning this correctly, it would tip to one side to create its three points of contact - bottom of two long poles and one end of short pole. This would create an angle which would take the two long poles out of the way of the hanging hammock. It looks the strut running down to the short pole on the side of the hammock is going to be an issue though.

I don't think so... no strut touches another, but the long struts pass close by one another.

From the point of view of the "hammock" there are two struts leaning in from above that hold up the hammock, and one short strut that touches the ground off to the side, not under the hammock.

...or are you saying strut when you mean tendon? Even if you mean tendon, they are all out of the way.

I can't wait to try this and see how short the X struts can be!

    I agree.

Of course that means the struts the hammock hangs from might need to be longer. And where's the end of the short strut in relation to the hanger's center of gravity?

    Yes, I was meaning tendon.

However, all of this does have me thinking that perhaps that tendon is not needed at all - or at least not in the front. I will see if I can put together a diagram and explanation of what I am thinking.

Just short of being right underneath it.

PGSoft, I think I know what you mean. You are wondering if the tendons running from the top ends of the struts down to the cross strut will get in the way. I think they will run right underneath the hammock, and will not interfere. They will, however, limit how much sag you can have in your hammock.

WV, is it possible to use a triangular cross strut? Put the short base of a long triangle under the hammock...

Lost me on that one. Let's make one at MAHHA and see what happens.

Ok, make the X with two struts just like in the picture, but make the cross strut a long triangle. The base of the long triangle goes under the hammock, and is the part of the cross strut that rests on the ground. Vertical tendons attach to each corner of the base. The apex of the triangle is the end of the cross strut that is in the air, opposite the base, when the structure is tipped to allow hanging.

The effect of the base of the triangle is to bring the tendons, which attach to it's corners, down at a steeper angle, so they do not interfere with the hammock.
