    DIY hammock stand

OK, I've searched the forums for plenty of other DIY hammock stand designs. I realize that most people have focused on making them portable.

What's wrong with the idea of just cementing a pair of 10 foot long 4x4s into the ground? Bury them about 2.5 feet, cement them in, and maybe attach a couple of eye bolts to the top.

4x4s come readily in 8, 10, 12 ft increments for about $15-$30. With concrete, this could be a fairly inexpensive setup.

    My only questions:
    1. Will I need some sort of top beam. I imagine that the hammock will tend to pull the 2 beams together. Perhaps even a section of pipe.
    2. How far apart should the posts be? I'm guessing about 14 feet or so.

    Thanks.

People have done this. Distance can vary depening on how high you want to secure the ends to the posts. You can make them 10 feet apart and have a faily low attachment point. Theoretically you can go to a few inches longer than your structural ridgeline.

There was a recent post with members showing pics of their in ground stands. Some use 6x6 cemented in the ground, 4x4's with support, fence posts cemented...

The overhead beam is cheap insurance.

Distance between the posts will be dictated by the ridgeline length of your tarp, plus a foot or so on each end for the tarp's suspension. The longest rl I'm aware of is the 13 foot Claytor diamond, so unless you go crazy with big tarps, 15' is plenty.

If I were to build a permanent solution, it would be something more like what this person built:

Looks a whole lot better than two posts in the yard...and the wife won't roll her eyes too much.

at 2.5 feet deep...they will work there way free after time...you will want some type of top rail....

i would go 3 foot deep and make the hole wide as well..maybe 2 foot wide...
    the wider the better
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I'm already thinking of making a combined swingset and hammock stand. I'm a victim of "requirements creep" and just like any acquisition program, it's starting to get more expensive!

My "2 posts in the ground" is morphing into an A-frame style swingset that could pull double duty as a hammock stand.

I found some very beefy brackets rated at 900 lbs. The plan is using 4x4s to form the legs of the A-frame and run a 16 foot length of a 4x6 across the top. Does this sound doable?

    A-frame brackets

WARNING: these are stupid expensive, about $50 each.

JUSTIFICATION: I've seen plenty of other brackets that will help you make an A-frame. However, most of them amount to a single thin (1/8 inch at most) sheet of metal that doesn't seem to offer much structural integrity. Probably fine for a short (6-8 foot wide) A-frame swingset in which 50 pound kids are playing on. But the cheap brackets seem like they can't handle the loads of a 15 foot span and 200 lb adult in a hammock.

I'm still researching and haven't ordered them. This store is located in IL and I have no idea how much they'll charge for S&H.
