    Underquilt Questions

    Hey All,
Got a few questions on underquilt construction. Have looked at alot of different ones and some plans. The inside layer on a down underquilt, I have seen them sewn through to the outside, but I thought I saw a few that weren't. Is one better than the other?

Down quilts are either sewn-thru or baffled...but either way you'll see stitches on the inner layer of the quilt.

Sewn-thru means both the inner and outer shells are sewn to each other. This means that there is no insulation at the stitching.

Baffled means that the inner layer is sewn to a strip of material (the baffle), which is sewn to the outer layer. This means that there is still insulation at the stitches...it'll be the height of the baffles. Baffles are usually made of mesh material to keep the down in the chambers. A 2" thick quilt will have 2" baffles, a 3" quilt will have 3" baffles, etc. (Actually, the chambers are usually overstuffed so 2" baffles will yield a 2.5-3" thick quilt.)

    This is sewn-thru:

    And this is baffled:

Cool, thanks Jeff. I get it now. Took me a few to visualize it in my head. I knew I had seen the sewn thru style. Got material coming to make quilt and was working out the plans.

When I started looking at quilts, I had the same thought. I came to realize that what I took for being sewn-thru was acctually the height of the over stuffing.
