    Molly Macpack Inspired Winter Sock.

Looking at Mac's pics gave me some ideas to modify my winter sock for slightly easier entry/exit. Si I eliminated some extra material required for the head end to be large enough to slide over your shoulders and pad, and added a little for a flap and pockets, it ended up only adding 0.18 ounces over the sock.

Thanks again to Just Jeff for the original plan ideas off his site and thanks to Mac for his door flap idea.

I am honored, Sarge! (Even if it is a bit square, compared to the SEEP!)

Three years ago I signed up at HikingHQ to learn how to use hammocks!

It has actually been trimmed down a little on the bottom from those pictures. Too much extra material was at the bottom. But that has a JRB quilt (under the hammock) and my SUL Hammock inside.

    Thanks for the ideas

Sarge, if you modify another sock, try this:

    1. Make big darts underneath each end and cut off the excess material, to tighten up the sock underneath the hammock.
    2. Make a 60" to 66" cut in the sock that follows the edge of the hammock in the middle of one side.
    3. Add a tongue-shaped extension to the upper edge of the cut, so the bottom of the extension is curved, and the curve dies out just past the ends. The extension should be 12" to 18" in the middle, and 3" or 4" at the ends.
    4. Put pockets in the extension.

See, there is no need for vertical cuts in your sock... unless you just like them!

    1. Already did that (not shown) although I think we could trim a little more.

I see what you mean. I would basically have to start from scratch with a new one on this project. I did it by making two halves that are straight along the top where the ridge-line is, and curved under the bottom to follow the contour of the hammock when sewn together. Then I cut the entry hole and added the flap.
  6. Put pockets in the extension.
Mine has pockets all along the bottom of the flap. Three large pockets to add weight. After making a couple of extra small adjustments I'll do a video

I like 'em. I wanted a smaller than the entire top hole. I'll show in the video.

    That's a great design, Rock/Mac.

I was thinking of a sock design that follows this idea, but has the "entry hole" on both sides, and the flap/door is removable. It will have some buttons/holes along the top at the head/foot ends. Then I can put a bug net over it in the summer and a DWR flap over it in the winter.

Also, that means I can remove the flap when it's a little warmer, and add it when the wind picks up at night.

    Thoughts?

Love the sock. That looks very serviceable and handy. Thanks for the vid!
