If you could get to the gorge a day earlier, you'd have a nearly new moon, so very dark skies and the Perseid meteor shower to watch. If you look up the dates, it will list the 12th and 13th, but that is referring to 12am midnight on the 13th, so it's really Weds and Thursday nights.

I would, but I have some work that needs to be done. I went to Max Patch a few years back and watched it. Very nice.

I would say they are much less worrisome than in the spring. Salty was there over the weekend. He should be able to give us a report.

Yeah and don't fret the mosquitoes ... usually the gnats chase them away

Sarge, just got back from the gorge on Rock Jock and Conley with my two boys, and we picked up a half-dozen ticks between us. I didn't put any treatment on our clothing and no deet, etc. on our skin. Evidently, ticks don't mind salt water.

At dusk near the river, we had a few gnats, but they weren't too bad, and as soon as it got dark, they were no longer a problem.

    .

I always seem to have more problems with bugs while camping along the rims, especially gnats. Down in the gorge, just minor cases mostly.

    YMMV of course

I need to make an addendum... It seems I picked up a chigger or two...started itching in a couple of spots, today. But overall, I'd still say no annoying bug problem.
