Thinking Linville Gorge 13-15 August - Where is the hole in the rock?

I was looking at Hawk-eye's pics thinking of going there. I got a Nat Geo map and found the Babel Tower trail but haven't found Hole in the Rock or Sandy Flats.

Some one throw me a bone please

You have a GPSr? I can give you the coordinates. Have to do it later if Ken doesn't beat me too it. On the iPhone instead of the PC right now

I do have a GPS and I usually can read coordinates. I'm really good at UTM and MGRS, passable at Lat Lon.

That's our site Sarge, but we have more data now than is on that map. It has not been updated in a long time. Our gpx file is here:

    http://www.linvillegorge.net/linvill...illemaster.gpx

If you load the waypoints from that into your gps you'll have all the campsites along the river. Sandy Flats is one of them. They'll display as UTM in your unit if that's what you have the unit set up for.

MY GPS is 1,000 years old (a slight exaggeration) and doesn't do much more than tell me where I am. But I have a map and now see where I think I'm going. Looks like it is about 2 miles from the trail head to the hole.

There's actually two places that have distinct holes. But you're about right on the position. Not hard to find at all. You can keep an eye across the river as you get near that spot and pick it out. You might want to spend some time out on the point of Babel Towers ... beautiful views there.

Sarge, heading south on the Linville Gorge Trail from Babel there is a place where the trail was chiseled or blasted out of a boulder to get across it. Hole in the Rock is something like 100 yards or so back north of that. That about right Hawk-Eye?? Anyway, theres a small camp between the trail and the river right across from the hole. We call that Hobo Camp. You should be able to find a route to the river through that camp going kind of southeast downt the hill. It's easier than going down the nearby gully!

That Nat Geo map was pretty close to useless. If you want to borrow my Linville Gorge map that I picked up at the visitor center, let me know. If you get there early enough, you can pick up your own instead. It was under 8 bucks I believe. Just PM me if interested. I'm hopping between Knox and Townsend pretty frequently. After all, I still owe you some trail maintenance for that steak in Slickrock.
