A dynaglide mayan might not bee too bad, just bright.

I was just talking about amsteel for the arc suspension. Dynaglide for the weave would be really really expensive... but probably pretty light.

Maybe you could use a spectra braid at a size between spectra braid fishing line and 2mm dynaglide...

That's why I was thinking of unbraiding the amsteel. When you cut the cost by 1/12th, it's not too bad.

True! Good idea!

I don't know how strong the strands are, but they are still probably overkill for this purpose.

Only draw back would be the blue rubbing off... Which color doesn't leave smudges? The gray?

I have at least 2 souvenir hammocks from my "Expense paid S E Asian Vacation" in the tropical VietNamese Peoples Paradise" They are made of 2 strands of what looks like mason line. The tie-off end is 2 small loops side by side. Sorry, but I'm too "computer ignert" and have neither the equipment or expertise to post pictures. They are quite strong, tho. Making one of amsteel seems like overkill. A while back there was a thread from an Australian HF-er who posted pix of hammocks encountered in his travels Through Viet Nam. Hammocks were quite prolific over there. The ones sold to us "Tourists" were considerably longer than those made of what looked like nylon twine and used by the local folks.

Yeah, the gray is pretty colorfast. Or, at least it doesn't show on my hands.

Gray either doesn't smudge or I just don't notice it. Probably the latter.

It would be a lot of work, but I think the unbraided amsteel might be super comfy too since it wouldn't be conformed to the shape of the braid. It's unlikely we'll ever know considering the time investment required.

I agree. The sheer number of strings required to make a Mayan hammock, especially a good comfortable one, is somewhat intimidating. With them all sharing the load, I'd be willing to bet kite string would hold.

But, it would be kind of cool to have an Amsteel hammock. I mean come on; way cool. Plus, at the individual strand level, the weight is probably close to that of Mason line. Close enough anyway. I'd also wager the Amsteel would be more comfortable against the skin. The cost is somewhat negated by separating the strands too.

But before anything, Cannibal has to go fetch himself some weaving lessons. Anybody up for a trip to southern Central America. First round of beer is on me.
