    hammock a bivy?

So does a complete hammock system (hammock, bug net, tarp) qualify as a bivy set up as far as size is concerned? I hear people talking about bivy hunts and hikes a lot but I always had a 2 man tent until now.

I hear things like "I can do a week with my bivy gear in that (2400CI) pack"

Sort of. A bivy bag is usually made of thicker material so it packs down bigger and weighs more than most hammocks. Depending on how big your tarp is, it may even be bigger than a hammock+tarp. My HH setups including tarps pack down to about the size of the Integral Designs Salathe bivy I had.

But a bivy is just a waterproof sleeping bag...and it's nowhere near as comfortable as a hammock, IMO.

I think a bivy can mean many things based on who says it, but here is what wikipedia says.

i think a hammock, with bug net and tarp can serve as a bivy. It is a backup plan for many. If the situation will not allow one to hang their hammock, they can sleep on the ground under the tarp, and in the hammock and bugnet if necessary. I had to sleep on the ground recently, but there were no bugs, so I didn't use the hammock and bugnet.
