I could not believe what I was hearing!

I called the rangers today. I had a couple questions about camping at a Campground. I got around to asking about hammocks. The ranger told me as long as I did not put nails in the trees it was fine. He went on to say that it was ok to screw eyebolts into the trees as long as I remove them before I left. He said it wouldn't hurt the tree it would heal in no time. What are they thinking? Sure one time will heal fine but get dozens doing it and well you get my point.

You asked about hammocks, and they answered as though you had asked about hunter's tree stands.

Did you take the time to explain how ethical hammock users hang?

The ranger apparently had a degree in

public administration or recreation, and not forestry!

Seriously though, we need to take every opportunity to educate the folks who administer our public lands as to how little impact we actually have on the land. Some things we DO NOT do: Drive nails. Screw-in eyebolts. Dig water diversion trenches. Snore. Well, maybe just a bit until we find our best sleepiing position.

As I age, I am becoming more sensitive to the need to "spread the gospel" as it applies to low impact land use.

Yeah I told him, I had never heard anything like that before. I also assured him that I practice Leave no trace regardless of where I camp. My dad always had us pick up everything before we left whether it was ours or not.. Leave it better than you found it.

Serious? I was planning a quick overnighter up there. That sucks... guess I won't ask either.

by the way, really like your Stone Mt. picture. I was up there a couple of weekends ago and was surprised/disappointed in all the stairs they added on the rock face part of the trail. I know it's probably for safety reasons, but part of the fun was scaling up that rock holding onto trees and roots. haha! I do like how nice the trail is towards the waterfall though.
