I really want to hike in
I really want to drive up
I want to hike in, but I'll go either way
I want to drive up, but I'll go either way
Doesn't matter - I'll be there
Where is this shin-dig goona be?
yep... i`ve been to the mt rogers area for a couple chilli trips (pre-hammock).
one oct, it got down to 14f by morn w/ a howling wind, 1-2" of snow & lots of ice.
i went in feb one year & it got down to -6f by morn, w/ several inches of snow & a howing wind.
one thing about it, you just want to watch the weather systems that are going on for a paticular time frame & don`t forget the advice given by ed speer & other experianced hammockers... first thing you`ll want to think about is... location, location, location. (notice that patern w/ mt rogers & other high & exposed places... howling wind?).
there are more protected places in the mt rogers area, were you can still get nice clod temps. and if a real cold front is moving through that weekend, there are great places to camp a thousand or more feet lower than the highest places there. of course... same probably applys to most any other area too.
BTW... yall may want to think about 2 or more seperate trips for this group since there`s no way every one`s going to be able to get to the same location. afterwards we can exchange notes. ...tim
I too will something make and joy in it's making
[B]where is this campout suppose to take place?i have been hammocking for 3 yrs, but everytime i come out to hang the temps hae been in the warm side. even tho i do tend to backpack between oct and april.

I vote hike in, but (for safety reasons) not very far. Say a mile or so, that way if it's too cold for whoever & the gear isn't sufficiant you/we/me/they can bail out to the safety of a nearby car heater.
Doctari.
Looks like most folks want to hike in at least a short distance, and no one says they will only go if we don't hike. Sounds like hiking it is.
Nate, have you narrowed down the location yet?

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
I have no idea. I heard suggestions for Mt Rogers and Red River Gorge in KY.
Does anyone else have any good suggestions?
In RRG you have lots of places to tent or hammock. It is basically the same drive time for me. I have been to Mt Rogers quite a bit and going back over Turkey Day so I might be getting burned out on it
I'll start another thread looking for suggestions on Places to go.
