January Campout - Hike In or Drive Up?

For the January campout, do you have a system that you'd feel comfortable hiking into single digits with? Would you rather hike in for the beautiful scenery, drive up to an established site so you have access to backup gear, or does it matter?
“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall when the wise are banished from the public councils because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.” ~Judge Joseph Story

I would like to hike in, but not too far. As I would have to carry a lot of gear to get into single digits! We don't get single digits here in AR very often, so I really don't have a specific setup for that.

Given the time of year a drive up might be better. Has a location been determined yet?

I think a drive in spot would be nice because it would allow people to bring more gear for show-and-tell. If we are hiking in to a camp spot I'm going to carry the minimum amount of gear that I can.

It would be nice if we were at a place where day hikes are possible also.

    Just something to think about.

I choose I want to hike im but would go either way.

I see both as being good options. I like hiking in the cold weather and snow as long as I don't need snow shoes.

my tent setup can go to -5° or 15° depending on which bag I use. My 15° setup (tent, pad, bag) weighs 4.8 lbs. If I use my -5° bag it changes to 6.5 lbs.

If you go to RRG there are places to camp a 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the road. Lots of trees and tent sites.

Guess you can see I will not be in a hammock.

no, I just don't think a hammock setup can get that temp range 15° and weigh less than what my tent setup is.

I have a hammock just haven't set it up. Always dark when I get home and I am gone on the weekends backpacking.
