your instincts are right, it comes down to (1) how long the beam is and (2) how heavy. You'd agree, if the beam is heavy "enough" it stays put. How heavy is that? I gotta do some math here, where's that paper and pen...

    (later)
Answer - heavy. To a first approximation, if the attachment point is 2.5' off the floor and the beam extends 2.5' beyond the hammock on each side, the beam would have to weigh twice the shear force to stay put. For a 200 lb occupant and the hammock attaching with a 30 degree angle the shear force is 173 lbs.

now if you happened to have a couple pallets of bricks sitting in the basement...

So, my question is, how to do this with TJIs (for anyone with construction experience)? All of the floor joists in my home are made from TJIs, not 2x10s or similar.

TJIs are not a solid piece of wood, rather 3 pieces put together that resemble a capital "I" when stood up (as they would be in a home) and looked at from the end.

The piece in the middle (web) is a rather thin particle board, perhaps 3/8s to 1/2 inch thick. There are pre-marked holes that can be knocked out with a hammer to run wiring or plumbing through.

My thoughts are, could I just bang out a couple of these knock-outs and run my suspension through there? My hunch is that it would be plenty strong, but I wanted your opinions.

OLDSCHOOL thread! But I did a radon test out of curiosity since I watch a lot of movies and tv on the projector screen in my basement. It's also my hammock area. Radon was under the "take action" level but not really low either. And since I usually eat a bag of microwave popcorn every night, I am totally going to get lung cancer! I think they finally got rid of that "popcorn lung" substance, though.

So I skipped the last few pages, but it looks like the result is either attach loops 18-22' apart, or hang a pole that is say, 14' long from the ceiling and use that like an upside down turtledog stand. Right? And check for radon. Don't forget that...
