    over cover / weathershield improvisation

I'm new to hammocks so someone probably already did this but here it is

camera battery is dead so i drafted it

this is supposed to look like a space blanket wrapped around the hammock from the ridge line... I had my 40 degree bag, thermarest pad inside my crazy crib and it was 37 degrees I was suprisingly warm, no cold spots, no waking up cold, I think this will hold up even colder and it's dirt cheap

getting cold and I'm improvising until more gear arrives in the mail, I'm considering a clark north american hammock because i like the idea of a built in, zippered weathershield, also like how their tarp locks down so I ended up simulating that last night by staking down my cheap space blanket which has tie down holes already on it, I'm thinking about putting velcro strips on the ends so i can shut it like the clark tarp

angled the ridgeline hoping condensation would flow out and so far it didn't build up, that made me wonder if that's why the clark tarp has that funky angle at the foot?

I had my tarp over this too but if I can find a bigger space blanket I almost wouldn't need one, at first I thought about just wrapping the space blanket around the hammock like a burrito which might be warmer but this worked well and gave headroom and ridgeline to hang stuff from, yay for cheap light weight space blankets

Isn't it noisy every time a breeze comes up?

wasn't windy enough for me to notice but yeah i bet that might happen

especially if you used it as your tarp, maybe a taut catenary cut blanket would help with that but I've never seen one, I'll test it some more when it gets windy and let you know if it crackles me insane

Somebody talked about making a tarp out of a SB not too long ago, was it you? I wonder if it would reflect a couple of degrees back down, but there's that whole heat rises thing. Of course, the other thing that was brought up was the utter lack of stealth!

I saw the old style space blankets - the heavy ones with the silver on one side and a dark green color on the other side, with gommets in each corner, for $20 at the Army-Navy surplus store. The dark green would maintain stealth. I have one like that but it is bright blue on one side and some of the silver side, whatever it is, has worn off.

I guess if you didn't mind the slight weight penalty, you could just sew a space blanket liner onto a traditional sil tarp.

Not quite a space blanket but the army has a casualty blanket that is a lot heavier. It is reflective on one side and green on the other. I think it might hold up better than your average space blanket. and its a lot quieter and already has grommet holes. they can be difficult to find but I saw one the other day on the sportsmansguide site.

Angle all you want, it will still be a condensation trap...

    Pan said it...

Mylar alone is prone to easy tears that just go like lighting once they start, and when its laiminated to other fabrics or with scrims to stop tears (like in sails) its HEAVY....

Aluminized materials give some radiant heat loss protection and possibly convective protection, but are nearly always non-breathable...
