Yep, that's what I've been told. Maybe that's why I haven't made it there yet (?) .

While there are a few trees over 3 ft, (Bear Island - Hammock Beach State Park ) I did not find any worth trying to hang a hammock on when I went over there to scout it out about a month ago. However, there were many small islands ( few hundred square feet in size ) in the area that I have seen with trees that you could hang from. Problem is, I do not know if they are privately owned or not.Bear Island is one of my favorites for base camping. Not a good place for hammocks, though. I doubt there is a tree over three feet tall on the entire island

Welcome Noob,
I've only been a member a couple of weeks and have had several "why didn't I think of that!" moments. I haven't made it to the OBX, but I've flown over it on Google Earth several times- looks like beautiful land. As for camping behind the dunes on an unspoiled beach (hopefully still unspoiled), St. Joe's Peninsula on the gulf coast of Florida is hard to beat, and the maritime forest has trees tall enough for hanging. I haven't checked on the beach condition following the oil spill, but hopefully they'll get it cleaned up. Anyhow, welcome to the forum.
Welcome! Let's all do bear island!
I'm ready for a Bear Island trip. How about some time in October?
BTW, I do recall one site a way back from the surf that may have trees that accomdate hammocks.
