Need to ask the experts about under quilts, pads or both for Linville Gorge

    Hello all,
I have not had much input as of yet but have been heavily lurking! I finally got my first Hammock yesterday. ENO double nest.

A few friends and I are planning a trip for a 4 day 3 night Linville Gorge camping trip in late December. We are still in the plannig phase right now as to exactly where we are going to hike/camp. We have done this trip a few times before and camped in the same place, that may change this trip.

Anyways, I have decided that I am going to try and hang on this trip instead of the traditional tent like everyone else in our group does (including me).

I know it is going to be cold and my be rainy, I plan on having a 12 X 14 Chinook tarp and I have a zero degree sleeping bag for a top quilt.

My question is for this cold of weather (range from 0-30 degrees at night) do I need both a pad and UQ or can I get away with one or the other? I plan on using an old rectangular slumberjack 0 degree sleeping bag as my UQ, if one is required.

I know it is better to have to much warmth than not enough, but then I'll be packing 2 sleeping bags and a pad rolled up.

I plan on experimenting before I go, but here in FL we just don't get the real cold weather and if we do it will be later than our trip. So I need to tap into the trunk line of knowledge here at HF and see what you seasoned vets think!
If more information is needed please let me know.
Any and all comments are welcome!

******Mods, if this is not in the correct section please move, thank you.********

    Thanks,

    Tbull

You could get by with one or the other for sure.
If you make a UQ ....read up on all the threads about them to get a good and proper fit.
I have used pads to -7º ..... just make sure your shoulders have something under them. There are many threads on making a "T" with pads to keep your shoulders warm.
If you want a 100% for sure solution .... get a CrowsNest from Stormcrow.
Then you will be good to go.
    Wish I was going.
