    Paracord prussic suspension?

Here's the plan: I fold the webbing in two, tie a figure-8 to secure the ends together, and pass the ends around the tree and through the newly formed loop. I then use a taughtline hitch through the webbing's figure-8 loop to secure my single ridgeline to the two straps, then pull the ridgeline up to the desired height. To secure the hammock to the ridgeline, I tie paracord prissics to the ~8mm diameter ridgeline, then run one of the two ends of the paracord (hanging loose from the prussic) through the loop in my hammock and tie both ends together with another figure-8.

    What do you think?

wow, 8mm diameter ridge-line is quite a bit thicker than most of us use. You use what you have available, of course. It's just out of the experience of most folks here.

An advantage to that thick a ridge-line is that your prusiks have a good chance of working. Rule of thumb is that the cord used for a prusik loop be no more than 1/2 the diameter of the cord it attaches to do [insert caveats about getting by with thicker cords but more loops, etc.]

That said, for your taut-line hitch to hold under load, I think that 8mm cord is going to have to be very pliable to form up the kink that keeps the rope from slipping. I can recall only one person posting on HF claiming success in using a taut-line hitch this way. If it does ever work, it surely depends a great deal on the rope.

From everything I read on the forum about paracord, it is not a recommened cord as it is not that strong. Step up to Sampson Amsteel, very strong for its size, 7/16 is rated 1,600 lbs, about 3 times paracord. I remove the factory rope/cord on my hammocks and replace with Amsteel.

I first tried 550 Paracord. FAR too stretchy for any practical use.

I've broken 550 cord twice, and it was the real thing b/c I cut it off the chute myself. Don't use it unless you want to hit the ground. And if you do, please post the video!

So is that a no for using 550 as a ridgeline? I have a ton of it and was going to give it a shot. But I like my body in one peice.

It would be ok for a structural ridgeline and certainly for a tarp ridgeline. I wouldn't use it to support my weight.
