    What machine???

Been thinking about making some gear & wanted to know what is a good sewing machine? Looking for something that can handle from 1.1sil to polyester webbing. What do you guys recommend/use? Machine will also be used for regular needs around the house so want something good but still affordable. Thanks for any ideas

I bought mine on Ebay... there are some good deals there, although shipping costs a lot. You can check out sewing machine repair shops and see if you can find a good one for a good price (sometimes people give them broken ones that they then fix and sell), or you can go all out and buy an expensive one...

I don't know the capabilities of all the different machines, maybe someone else can chip in here with better advice.

You don't need one with a bunch of fancy stitches. Straight stitch and zig zag should be the only stitches you will ever need. Older machines are usually built better and are more durable than a lot of stuff you see in stores these days.

Singer! Only because everybody knows how to work on them and parts for the older machines are still available.

I'll second the "older machine" vote... I use a machine that's almost 40 years old and its better by far than most of the new ones.

Sews basic stitches well without complaint even in fabrics that would cause a new machine to burn out. (4 layers of seatbelt webbing without a hiccup on more than one occasion.) Most modern machines won't even get the needle through 2 layers.

I use my wifes Singer(when she's not home) until I get a chance to repair mine. Bought it at a flee market for $10. Only issue is it only goes in reverse... Thing weighs a ton but my friends wife says it is a great machine. The feeder actually has 4 different settings depending on the strength of the fabric...

Geez, am I actually talking about sewing on a forum...

Did you catch the game last night, yeah I was drinking beer and eating pretzels all night when it was on.

Hey, we're talking here about complex, complicated machinery. Power tools... right?

    Hehe, true.

Any machine will work as long as it's in good condition. Find one at a yard sale, flee market or even the local paper.

Power tools yes!! Would be better it if had a 24volt powerpack battery so we could take it on the trail. Opps... That would be one heavy pack item.
