Try it out, or have them show you it sews, before you hand over the cash.

For minimal grief, there's only Janome.

If you can find an old non-computer model, it will serve you well.
BTW - Janome made machines for many other labels. If the machine was made in Japan, it was probably Janome.

For an archetypal model, see the "Thread Banger 12"
    http://janome.com/index.cfm/Machines...-Quilting/TB12
TB12 is a cast aluminum body machine that is based on a former model so popular that long-time Janome fans have been begging to see it again. So, here it is upgraded and updated for ThreadBanger.
The TB12 has 12 actual stitches, including a number of stretch stitches, and multiple stitch functions, including length adjustment.

On eBay, someone is selling a refurb "industrial strength" Janome.
Check out the photos of it sewing multiple layers of leather and naugahyde. Also note the mechanical linkage, underneath. No "rubber bands" to go out of timing.

Nice! I can appreciate any kind of well made machine. Personally, I would like to own the Marie Osmond quilt companion, with her around who would need an underquilt?
