    Talking In Progress

Well here it is just a little over a week after joining HF and I have the material, thread, rope and was able to borrow a sewing machine. The only thing I am missing is the webbing. For all you guys out there that are hesitant about using a sewing machine, My neighbor brought on over yesterday. it had never been used nor have I ever used one. I set it up from loading a bobbin, threading the machine and got the upper tension set for the ripstop. With the manual it was a cinch!! I hemmed a scrap peice and other than keeping the material straight so me stitches are straight I think it looks awesome. I wish I had pictures to get some opinions on the hems. One thing about the sewing machine. It is old and I thing it needs to be lubed. it is pretty clean for sitting on a shelf for several years, but with the foot pedal fully pressed I would say it stitches 2-3 stitches / sec. I don't mind the speed but it sounds as if it struggling some hence the need to lube. Any suggestions other than lubing? My goal is to have my first basic hammock sewn by this weekend. I'll try to post pics. Thanks to the forum and to all members for your posts and assistance.

PS. I told my 2 neighbors/hunting partners and they already want me to make them one!!!

    Do the lube!
Either buy some sewing machine oil (sold at any sewing supply store or wally's) and do a small drop on all critical areas of contact.
Or take it in to a local shop.
Your stressing the motor by running it dry. Not good. Motors do burn out.

Usually unscrew a few points and the inerds will be exposed. Turn machine wheel by hand to access all the needed locations. Clean as needed.

Q-tips make excellent applicators; also good for reaching in to catch drips!

    Progress Update

So last night I hemmed the perimeter once and the long edges twice. I have a question. What would cause the stitches to "inch worm"? What I meann by that is the stitches get really tight and then they spread out, tight and spread out. Today I plan on sewing the channel in the ends and gathering and whipping the ends. For a basic hammock is that all there really is? I have got to be missing something. I know bugnets, quilts etc, but if I want a hammock to hang from is this all I have to do?

Thanks for all you guys inputs, post, pics and suggestions.

I'm having a blast sewing of all things.

That's pretty much all you need to do; a basic hammock is a pretty simple thing. Big kudos for jumping right in with both feet. If it were me, I'd take the machine to a shop for some TLC. Storage is often as hard on machines as constant use. Not sure I totally understand the "inch-worming", but my guess would be bobbin tension.

    Good lick!

If you sew an end channel, then you don't need to whip it. Just put the cord thru the channel and gather it that way.

Congrats on taking the plunge! Soon you'll be making underquilts and dining room drapes.

I was in the same boat as Eouzts. most sewing I ever done in the past were buttons or adding a patch to a fav pair of jeans & that was by hand.

I now have stuff sacks, 1.5 hammocks, tarp & now on to a TQ
    No Drapes for me!

Eouzts - glad you brought up lubing the machine.
I borrowed a machine - even tho fairly new - since it is not mine I'll be checking that out later

Inch Worming makes the stitches look like this:

    . . . . . . . ..... . . . . . . . . . . ..... . . . . . . .

I think it could be from me pulling the material snug from the bottom and top. Shold I do that or just let the machine pull it thru at it's own rate, speed, tension? That's how I do it to try to stitch things straight.
