What is the needle called that you use to make the Whoopie Sling and where can they be had?

    Thanks.

I don't use a needle, I use a piece of wire that is folded in the middle to form a loop at one end. Works great for me!

I just use a length of stiff wire about 3 feet long. Fold the wire in half to form an eye on one end.
Thats what alot of folks use. Mine was labeled 'florist wire' and was silver in color, came as two different sizes (24 gauge and 30? gauge) on one spool for a couple bucks at a crafty type store.

The specific tool your asking about is called a loop turner or splicing tool. google that and you'll find a few options. The loop turners are available at craft stores.

    whoopie wire

I was desperate and stripped a piece of wire from some leftover cable wire I had. Not the thinnest but it worked for the project at hand. Opie said he used leader wire used for fishing. Easily obtained at your local fishing store I suppose. .035 or less as I recall. He used two diferrent sizes.

A Dritz loop turner (Google "Dritz 647") works well. Darning or tapestry needles are good, too. For both, you'll need to taper the end of the amsteel or dynaglide you pull through. There's info on darning needles here. I used a small file to make the already dull point of a large darning needle (size 0 or 1, I think) even more rounded so it wouldn't catch on individual fibers. It makes a good repair tool on the trail.

The various types of wire mentioned above work well, too.

+1 on the Dritz Loop Turner. I like it better than a needle.

+1 on the florist wire. Mine came precut in a pack at Michaels. I think it's either 22 or 24 gauge.

If you're wondering what to get me for Christmas though, I really want a Brion Toss Splicing Wand.
