Yes! That is one of the best features of IX UQs... they are stand alone summer UQs, but they complement anything else you have, be it down or synthetic, to keep you toasty in winter!

That is hard to say! I am a convert to 3/4 because of Shug's advice...

What would you recommend to go over a 2/3 down uq?

I use a Molly Mac Gear IX TQ and a Speer down Top Blanket.

Shug says if you are a backpacker, consider a 3/4 UQ. In winter, he puts a pad under his feet and legs. I use down booties.

I meant, which of your IX UQ's to double up on the bottom insulation? Over my down 2/3 UQ?

I'd use the 3/4 IX UQ in conjunction with your 2/3 down UQ. Not certain whether I'd put the IX on the outside or the inside... kinda depends on how they fit together. If they fit either way, I'd prefer the IX on the outside.

I'm curious as to how much weight you'd gain/lose, though. The difference between the 3/4 length and full length IX is, if I'm reading this right, 2.5 oz. My current overlarge GG thinlight pad is 7 or 8 oz--if I cut it down to just protect my feet and lower legs, it would still be @3 oz, I imagine. And I imagine your down booties would be at least the same. It seems the full length IX UQ would be simpler.

Of course, all this assumes that weight:warmth is equal among the options. Is there any loss of insulation in the IX UQ because of how it fits the hammock differently at the foot/leg section?

Just Jeff recently posted in another thread that some folks find that a short UQ fits better. I don't know anything about that. I find that the full length Universal IX UQ fits very well. I was most surprised to find, after making three or four different sizes and shapes, that the one which fits the Warbonnet hammocks best also fits all other hammocks best.

You have it figured out. You just has to choose!

    Hey Dvisic,
going on your own "Most bang for the buck" advice, I would go for the full length down UQ from AHE at the reduced price now.
It seems to fulfill all of the requirements that you have stated.
If you are not an extreme cold weather camper than the subject of combining the two UQ's for more warmth is a moot subject. You hadn't stated that extreme cold was one of your priority issues, but if you need to make it cooler in the hammock just ventilate the UQ until you need it to be warmer and then snug it up for yourself.
The coldest temperature is always just before sunrise most of the time and if you are an early riser on the trail you don't even experience the coldest temps. while hanging in the hammock anyway.HYOH/YMMV

Does the IX maintain its insulation when wet? How durable is an IX UQ?
