    Fabric samples

Anyone know where I can get some small pieces of fabric suitable for hammock gear so I can practice sewing on them? Picked up a nice "thread injector" last night, it is a Hammockmaker SWM-1000 De Luxe, not to be confused with the Dressmaker SWM-1000 De Luxe that only makes clothes. Paid $35, or about 50 cents a pound... The lady I bought it from also does repairs, and she had it cleaned, oiled and ready to go. She even gave me some lessons on threading and adjusting the tension.

Played around some last night with some cotton scraps she gave me and it makes a nice tight line and I can even get it somewhat straight. Figured it was time to move on to the kind of fabric I will be using, would love to have some scraps before I buy anything good. BTW, she had some mystery fabric made by a company called Pelican, she said it was given to her by a company that supplies material to make hospital sheets. Looked like excellent quilt material, anyone heard of this stuff?

Also, I'm watching Rev's gearmaking videos, that is explaining a lot. Really appreciate Grizz's math explanation, that is all crystal clear now, LOL.

Just get some pieces from Wallyworld, cheap enough.

How many bushels do you need.

Wally's $ bin is a good place for cheap or your local goodwill/salvation army type store has lots of fabric that been hacked up into rags. Just options...not always sil or ripstop, but it doesnt hurt to look?

I'm sure WV will hook you up. I think I hear the truck backing in towards his house now?

Jim, did you get the Hammockmaker SMW-1000 with turbo nitrous injection, 4:11 titanium gears, and the 46" lift kit upgrade or just the girly plain stock model?.

ask around your friends and neighbors- there is almost always someone who sews something- and helping them to clear out their 'scraps' will be greatly appreciated. I will admit you might not get any ripstop/momentum/silnylon this way but you will get a wide variety of textures, weights and content to gain lots of experience in a very short time; you will find out what tension, needle, and or speed adjustments are required, and when you get to the 'good' stuff you will have boatloads of confidence! If your WM doesn't carry fabric anymore just buy a yard of ripstop from Joanne or Hancock fabric, etc... and start trying to make a stuff sack. Most if not all of the seams that you need for a hammock can be learned by making small stuff sacks.

Also - if you don't already have one buy a seam ripper. You'll need it for tearing out a few boo boos as you get started.

Sounds like you got a good deal on your "Hammockmaker".

Your not going with a "patch work" hammock are you? I can see it now 37 different shapes and colors all thrust together to make a hammock.

Darn it, you guys are on to me. Figured if I got 3,245 scraps I could piece together a nice Irish Chain and get the ladies at the church to quilt it. My original thought of assembling it with nails and use R-19 fiberglass insulation probably isn't going to work though...
