For when your wife comes along

My wife is not a major fan of camping but she is my number one cheerleader (I know, I find that as amazing as you do), so on occasion she will accompany me on a camping trip. Knowing that she'll only go if she can be under the same tarp with me. What do you guys recommend - getting a double hammock or getting her own hammock and just putting them both under a larger tarp?

    Get her her own hammock.
It takes a special couple to sleep double in a hammock for more than a couple of hours. I'm lucky with my girl, we are pretty compatible for double sleeping.

That's the one time that sleeping on the ground in a tent with a double sleeping bag is better than a hammock. Having a nice warm woman to snuggle up with makes up for all the other discomforts.

    How about JungleHammock.com's Vertex?

Dig it: http://www.junglehammock.com/models/vertex/index.php. It's a two-person hammock via two solo hammocks connected together, but the beds are independent so one person doesn't risk stability of the other. Comes complete with bug netting, and full-enclosure weather fly, and a tarp.

+1 Agreed. Have yet to find a hammock system for two that outweighs the benefits of being on the ground together.

One tarp. Two hammocks. Three trees.

Kelty Noah9, 13ft on the diagonal.
ENOs, one single and one double, for that hang. It may work with other hammocks.

Sometimes, if very close, it works best with heads at opposite ends, then if very close, you can hold hands.

Normally, my husband and I use two tarps, but a mother black bear, and her three cubs, was regularly passing by our campsite. I wanted to tighten the space between the hammocks.

Yep, I'd lean toward G-Hawk's suggestion. Tried & true.
But I'm curious, has anyone here tested the JungleHammock.com's Vertex in person & talked about it?
Looks kinda heavy & complicated, but for car camping I guess it might be good. Looks neat & interesting anyway (but people have a way of doing that w/ pictures & drawings, don't they?).
I too will something make and joy in it's making

After decades of practice, trial and error and equipment comparison trips, we like to stay in a nice hotel or lodge, have a good king size bed sleep, a fine breakfast. Someone packs us a lunch, we pack a two-day emergency kit, and we're off for a day in the woods. If the hike area is remote, we arrange a boat, jeep or helicopter dropoff and pickup. If they miss the pickup time by an hour we use the satellite phone.

In my youth I took four days to climb to the top of some Rat Rock mountain for 20min panting and squinting, only to have five days of uncomfortable and dangerous descent. I'm enjoying my retirement a lot more.

It's also $539 plus shipping! Personally, I would rather have the flexibility of two hammocks and tarps that weigh less. I must admit, however, that I'd love to try a Vertex to see how it worked.

    Get her her own hammock.
Like Cannibal said. Got my wife her own BlackBird and she fell in love with it.
