if the darts will naturally taper the ends and i'm going with 42" wide and the hips, i'll do some math to figure out what the tap is. so if the UQ will be ~80" long i should come in ~26" from both ends to create the darts? is there a formula on how much to remove for the dart, if the chamber is 5.25" how much material do i pull out for the dart 2.5" or is something I need to play around with when figuring out what width i want at the end?

thank you for the input, i may use this suggestion to figure out how much to pull out when creating the darts. roughly how long where your darts and how wide were your chambers?

right now this is what I'm thinking 78"x42"x5.5", 9 chambers, 3.5-4" baffles and spacing of 5.25" between the baffles.

Whoo Boy. I'd rather not give you advice that specific. It's something you'll want to play around with.

For my next quilt, I'm making it 48" wide in the middle and 40" on each end(bigger than it has to be but it makes math simple). My 9 year old says that means it's 8 inches narrower at each end. There are a zillion options to get there from one giant 8 inch dart in the center to 128 sixteenth inch darts all along the edge. I've narrowed it down to 8 one inch darts(one in each chamber) or 4 two inch darts in the center four chambers. Leaning toward the four, but I'm ordering the fabric tomorrow so I've got a week yet to decide.

Noodle around, cut darts in paper and scotch tape it back together to see what moving them around does to the cup vs what you had in mind.

    - and be sure to post pics when you're done.

Further, remember I'm not a professional and, for that matter, also didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
