Jungle hammock spreaders

I saw (but don't remember where) a picture of putting some sticks or something across the lines on either end of a Claytor Jungle Hammock to act as spreaders. Has anybody done this? What did you use for spreaders? What effect does it have on the comfort and stability of the hammock?

I use them in the bug net to spread it out on both ends..I just use some wood dowels cut to length..
