I suppose I should be surprised, but I'm not: all the help, this late & this fast. It is in fact pretty much SOP here at Hammock forums.

Thanks to all, I'm working tomorrow, so will wait till Thursday to consider all, so keep em coming. I suspect that I'm going with Cuffs tape & sew Idea.

I do like Sgt Rocks Idea of sleeping with a 45, but this happened when I wasn't in the hammock. Also thanks for the reassurance that I can indeed fix it.

Cannibal's "hang em high" suggestion has actually been thought of in this household for the last 20 or so years. It's the next door neighbors grandson who is the likely culprit but I have no "proof".

The damage was done in my back yard (230' from any road) Fenced in on 2 sides, neighbor with evil grandson has yard also fenced on 2 sides, no fence between us. That will change soon! Electrified Concertina wire if I had my way.

Again, Thanks to all, I seriously do appreciate this! Now I can sleep tonight, even though it will be inside & not outside as I had planned.

On the scale of good to not good, that's definitely baaaad. String 'em up!

I'd reiterate what Rock said...if the slits are crosswise to the hammock's centerline, I don't think there's much you can do. You might be able to repair it if the cuts run lengthwise and you're careful about using it afterwards.

I'm not sure I'd use the tape+sew method, though. That'll prevent you from seeing the actual cuts to see if they're coming apart...until it's too late.

If he only tapes one side... He can see the other, no? It's ripstop tape...

i'd recommend a patch over one side, with x and box stitching over it to distribute the stress; both sides would be best, but this way you can monitor any change..
ps investigate 'wonder under' for placing the patch before sewing. km

    Sewing repairs

The experts at repairing this kind of damage would be sailmakers. Sailors often rip their sails / spinnakers, and the repairs have to hold up under all kinds of loads.

Bainbridge (a sailcloth manufacturer) makes a ripstop nylon tape that has a fairly tenacious adhesive. One strategy would be to apply the tape to both sides and then stitch around the perimeter of each tape patch.

There are several other types of tapes, and the supplier that I use, Annapolis Performance Sailing, has a good array:

Done properly, your repair will likely be stronger than the original fabric.

    Good luck.

    Doug

Send it to Penny at Specialty Outdoors, she knows her stuff for repairs and such. You may even be able to shoot her somes pics of the damage and see if she'll tell you what you need to do in order to fix it yourself.

She's good people and has been doing this for a long time---would be your best bet.
