    noob question about descender rings

will any kind of metal rings work as long as they are strong enough? i got a couple of what seem to be pretty stout rings at tractor supply co and they seem like they should work to me but i am a noob to hammocking so i was wondering if some of ya'll could clear this up for me. thanks ya'll.

Go to REI in the "rock climbing" section and look at the descender rings. They sell three. One is bright red anodized , one is a fat one like the first, and one is plain and thinner and lighter, and cheaper!
That seems to be the one that is currently in favor.

OH yeah! Then compare it to your tractor rings and I'm sure you'll figure out why everyone likes them!

tractor rings should work fine if they are welded. they will probably work if they are not but i wouldnt hang my heavy butt from them.

Descender rings are lighter and probably safer.

i'm not too worried about the weight of the rings. they seem to be all one piece and they are an inch and one eigth in diameter. i really wanted to know if the descender rings are made differently from the ones i have. from what i can tell in pics i have seen of descender rings they appear to just be plain rings. the ones i have are pretty thick too btw.

I'm not sure how they make them but descender rings don't have a visible seam. On steel rings I believe the weld is the weak spot.

Descenders are rated for crazy high loads yet they feel magically light in the hand. Perhaps made by elves?

I think you are probably OK. It is hard with out seeing and touching them. I have only seen them welded but maybe yours are not. Just being fro tractor supply and the fact that they are steel leads me to believe they are ok to use. Like everyone else said. Decending rings are very strong and light. Maybe light isn't what you are going for.

Below are what is found at Tractor Supply Company. These are less than $1.00 each but are significantly heavier. They are also rated for less than 600 pounds.

Below is the metal SMC Descending rings found at REI. They weigh nearly nothing and are rated for over 3,000 pounds. They are $2.95 each.

I began playing with the SMC rings today and they are nice. See my initial write up at the below thread on page 2:

If I do it over I will spend the extra time and money running down more of the SMC aluminum rings. I am leery of the galvanized rings since they have such a low weight rating. Everything I have read here points to equipment that has a weight rating of at least 1,000 pounds in your suspension system.
