    Hello from New Mexico

Hi All. I've just discover this whole new world (to me anyway) of hammock camping and found this forum to be an encyclopedia of info. Years ago I backpacked and canoed extensively in New England, but that ended after a helicopter accident left my back messed up.

Now that I'm located in NM, I'd really like to get back out on the trail again and my interest was sparked when I tried out my neighbor's hammock that he has set up in his backyard. I couldn't believe how comfortable it was. I searched the Web for more hammock info and found this site and got blown away by all of the information and resources available.

What really tipped the scales for me and sparked my interest in hammock camping was viewing Shug's entertaining and informative videos. If there is a Hammock Hall of Fame, he should be a charter member! While I'll never reach his level of deep winter antics, he's been my inspiration to give hammock camping a whirl.

I've placed an order for a Claytor Jungle Hammock and can't wait to try it out here in NM. Anyway, I look forward to learning more and hanging with you guys and gals here in the forum.

Thanks for the welcome Poppabear. I'll be plowing through all of the videos in short order. I don't think I've ever seen a forum with such helpful people and so much information. I can see a lot of hiking and backpacking coming up!

Shug's definitely good people! Welcome to the forums. Too bad I can't blame any of my injuries on something as cool as a helicopter crash. At least you get cool points for that.

Well, if dumb can be called cool then I guess I qualify! The chopper didn't crash, I did. We were doing a drop and go and as I exited, the toe of my boot caught on the strut and my momentum swung my pack around and took me with it and I landed on my back. Just two crushed disks but my back still talks to me now and again...

I would keep that to myself and just say that I was on a Black Ops mission and the chopper went down. Then I would say that I had to singlehandedly take out 30-40 guerilla fighters, then hike back to safety. But thats just me.

Just kidding. Glad you're ok now! A good hammock will have you fixed up in no time.

I'll never remember all that eflat7--thank goodness for copy and paste.... I hope the hammock will work out like I think it will, can't wait to get back out on the trail--I've missed it for a long time now.
