    toggle material

is the material for a toggle that important? in griz's videos he uses a branch, and i am seeing other people use aluminum (arrowshafts, etc), what about graphite/carbon? i have access to old golf clubs with graphite shafts i can chop up...how much stress is put on the toggle itself?

If it helps, there is a picture in the gallery of someone doing the very thing you speak of...... old golf club shaft toggle.

personally after the test i performed last weekend, i would trust it to hold if using the marlin spike hitch. last weekend, i used a soggy twig about 1cm thick with rope that was probably too thick for the toggle size and it still held my weight briefly. even still it didn't just drop me but rather collapsed gently. again, the rope was too thick really to be fair to the poor old little soggy-wet twig.

The rope should not rest on the toggle but on the knot and webbing above the toggle if using the marlin spike hitch. Because of this you can use many different seemingly weaker objects as a toggle. IIRC someone even used a pen as a toggle.

I was gifted with 7-11 Slurpee aluminum straws from LostCause.
They have worked well and are pretty to gander at.
Lots of options .... many use sticks, fobs, arrowshafts, biners and the like.

Trail sticks, like Grizz's vid, are hard to beat
