    No Topquilt?

I'm planning at trip to the Red River Gorge, near Stanton, Kentucky in October. The average temperatures are 50-75°.

Will I be comfortable with just 3-Season Crowsnest and some exra clothing? I tend to get cold easily, but the reviews of the Crowsnest might be inspiring overconfidence.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've tried pushing the limits a few times. I got by but I was wishing I had carried what I needed to be warm & snug.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Thanks, Gents! I was hoping that I could make the down vest work as a TQ and save some weight and volume in the pack.

I have tried using my down vest as a top quilt and a pad as a UQ this summer. Won't do that again.

I ended up putting on my wool hat, rain jacket, rain pants, and a pair of liner gloves that I always bring. That trip I also learned that setting your tarp to a "winter configuration" with the skirt close to the ground and the ends closed helps even on a seemingly windless night.

The second night I was seriously thinking of using the hot water bottle trick.

I always seem to forget that sleeping in the woods is a lot different then sleeping in a house with the the furnace turned off.

I am all for bringing the right amount of insulation and incorporating your extra clothes into your sleep system but from now on I plan on testing it more extensively in my backyard first.

So now the decision is between a synthetic 55° bag with full length zipper or a poncho liner.

    Trooper,

Many a planned trip at 50* can face 30* when an unexpected storm shifts and hits...Ponco liner is still a risky approach that time of year and location.

BTW, Quilts like a JRB Stealth are are 25% lighter than Pls, already have resealable headholes and pack to less than half the bulk of PLs...and are adequate to 40* and even lower if clothed... remember 'm biased on this subject, "but these are just the facts".

There is a difference between surviving the night and getting a good nights sleep when its cold. Better to have stuff to keep you warm and not need it than the other way around.

Also if you get too cold your thinking processes can go out the window and you can start making more bad decisions that can cause even more problems

Unfortunately, Jack, I just don't have the budget to get a new TQ and will have to make what I have work. A slight bias is expected, but rarely noticed.

    So my options are:

    REI 55° Travel Sack
    Sierra Designs Nitro 15°
    USGI Poncho Liner

The first two pack to about the same size, but the Nitro 15° is about 33% heavier and only has a quarter-length zipper. What should I do?

I'd go with the 55* bag and supplement with clothing as needed. That's just me, though, so do whatever you want/need.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?
