I understand a ridgeline for a tarp, but I noticed many are using a ridgeline in the middle over their hammock, supporting nothing, why is that necessary? Mine works just fine without it, so I'm sure there is other reasons you're using it..
Thanks!

Ursule, it's a personal preference. Some hang their tarp under the ridgleline in case of a heavy rain. It would prevent water from following the ridgeline down under a tarp that was hung above the ridgeline.
A ridgeline on the hammock helps to get the hammock set up with a consistent amount of sag from one set up to the next. Not everyone uses one but lots do to help speed up set up to get the hammock set just the right way and so that the lay of the hammock feels the same each time it is set up.

In addition to what Paul said, I like having the ridge line to keep the bug net off my face and to hang stuff from.
As discussed, a structural ridgeline is there to set a consistent amount of sag for every hang, to support bug nets and hammock socks, and to hang stuff from. You can also use a non-structural ridgeline made of something like elastic...it'll hold up a bug net and you can hang light stuff from it.

Shugmeister, I have watched your vids over and over again, and yes indeed I noticed for the first time last night that you cover the ridgeline thingy in your shed! I'm MrMoosseful (or something like that) on YouTube, I've been enjoying your vids. Are you an entertainer for a profession or something? Your vids are SERIOUSLY funny It was your vids (and R. Mears) that got me to actually be able to 'hang' in my hammock when I went camping and decided to sleep in a hammock for once (but of course didn't know how to hang it on a tree).
Do you still use the figure 9's by the way? I truly like them for the tarp, I got mine about 3-4 days ago, it certainly improves set-up time and they weight next to nothing
You know, you should make a vid about what to do when the trees around you are just WAY too big. In our forests we have a lot of simply ginormous trees, the width of them would require 3 treehuggers just to fit around them. For the moment I just keep looking till I find another suitable pair of trees... And another vid from SHug is never a bad thing. Basically, you should keep making vids.
I love a hammock ridgeline as I like a lot of sag.
My profession is entertainment....... cool that you found them.
I do use Figure 9's .... I like knots but the 9's are handy for tarp tweaking.
Big trees????? Bring an extra tree hugger or some back-up. Or like you said... just look for a site with smaller trees I reckon.
Taking a trip in September and hope to get a video TR out.....
