    uq / pad combo

this will be my first winter in the hammock.

wanting the most efficient system from the start, i started with landau ccf, and
then bought 3 - season uq - yeti and crowsnest.

planning the mt. rogers hang, my question is:

is it general practice to use ccf in conjuction with the uq?

it seems macs ix would be a good barrier between the uq and the hammock in extreme temps: 5 and below

Sure, if you're looking to extend the capabilities of your 3-season UQ, that's the cheapest and easiest way to go. A lot of folks that use 3/4 UQ's use a pad for down by the feet anyways.

When I went winter camping in the ADK last February, I brought CCF to supplement my DD Underblanket. Unfortunately it only got down to -13F, so the CCF was not needed

Lots of folks use CCF to supplement a 3 season UQ for winter. It's a good balance between cost, utility and weight, especially if you don't to a lot of winter camping. If you start camping a lot in winter, you may find it's worth springing for a real winter UQ.

I have some winter UQs, but in the shoulder seasons (almost everything is a shoulder season in Colorado) I'll still take a 20f-30f quilt and a torso pad if the temp drops below the UQ's capability.
