Free toggles for whoopie slings and ridge lines

Archery shops have carbon fiber arrow shaft scraps that work perfectly for suspension toggles. They are very strong, incredibly light (lighter than aluminum ones), easy to drill for keeper string holes, and also easy to file smooth on the ends so they will not damage tarp or hammock. When I asked for them, the owner happily gave me a handful. Tested them this weekend on tarp and whoopie sling MSH, and they worked great.

huh, never would have thought about that. I'll have to see what my local shop's got to offer. My dad might even have some old arrows kickin around somewhere. Thanks for the tip!

One word of caution. Use the carbon fiber toggles with webbing only. I used them once with amsteel as the spike in the Marlin hitch and had a failure. The amsteel does not have the surface area of the webbing and will crush the carbon fiber arrow shaft.

This was used as a spike not as a toggle. I know someone will ask so answering now

I can't speak to using them for Marlin Spike hitches but have been using them for toggles for quite some time with no problems. There is a big difference in carbon shafts these days though. I'm using the cutoffs from a set of bow-tuf style arrows that have a fairly tough coating on the exterior providing some stability to the exterior carbon fibers. All the advantages the OP mentioned. YMMV
