    S.K.A.H.O 2K11 Winter Edition!

    OK, Winter SKAHO.....

Weīve made some planning on the SKAHO this weekend and we have some ideas about how and when to do this.

WHEN: The whole idea about the winter camping is snow, cold weather and hopefully some Northern Light. Snow and cold weather is no problem but the northern light is a little bit hard to predict. BUT, Northern light occurs when it is dark and clear weather. Darkness is no problem since it (in january) gets dark about 1400 in the afternoon and it gets bright again about 900 in the morning. The problem is to predict when it will be clear weather

Since Iīm not a weather-god i canīt predict when it will be clear weather so I think weīll have to make a big guess and take some chanses about the weather-thing.

Since we canīt predict the weather we can forget about trying to be smart about picking a date for the hangout thinking about the weather situation. Instead we should just pick a date as early as possible so you guys who have to fly up here can book your flight early so youīll be able to get a fair price. Just ask Moski how it is to wait too long before buying a ticket.....

    HOW:
We discussed this at the SKAHO and we thought it would be a wise idea to hang close to the parking-lot and close to the cabins. Since many of us is beginners in winter camping there can easily be some problems with setups and things like that so we thought it would beīgreat to have some sort of backup-plan. If we hang close to the cabins it will be easy to go into the cabins and get some warmth if things doesnīt work out as we want to.
Another thing about hanging close to the parking-lot is that it will probably be dark before some of you get here the first day. Not so cool to have to walk 1km in deep snow in the dark the first thing you have to do.

Cooking: I will make sure that there is plenty of fire-wood in the cabins and in the wind-shelters. That means that you donīt have to bring alcohol, gas etc unless if you really want to cook your food on your own stoves. I will certainly cook on open fire

Well, there are probably thousand of questions about the winter hang so shoot, just shoot!

I like the idea of having the cabins as a backup! I'm quite the optimist, but when it comes to hanging in -20 to -30 celcius, I'm also a realist
    Safety first!!

Wow, does it really get dark that early in winter - insane! Better pack ekstra batteries then

If the stoves can be avoided, I vote for cooking over the fire too - nothing like it !

If everything goes well and people are up for it, I hope that we might make this an annual event?

What kind of gear do you guys have, and how do you plan to stay warm UQ/TQ wise?

Great, that SKAHOw talks has started !

I think Laggträsk is ideal in this case!
    With those cabins as backup!
    -25 to -30 C is frigging cold.

    Thoughts:
What do guys think about the lenght of the hang?
I think we agreed at SKAHO1 that, Friday -> Monday was great ?

    That gives us:
    Arrival
    First night
    First day
    Second night
    Second day
    Third night
    Departure

    Plane and transport thoughts:
    SAS flies to
    1. Skellefteå (Best if Peter drives) for around 1200 sek
    2. Umeå (Best if Joz Drives)
    3. Luleå ( Crap ? )

The best and most expensiv option so far is:
NextJet flies to Arvidsjaur for 2000 sek
This price is valid 2 months before and after that gets more and more expensive. (i think)

I think we noticed that 3 people with gear is max in a normal car.
So car transports to and from airports might be a problem?
Depending on how many fly boys show up.

    Gear thoughts:
Bring stuff to be able to fiddle with your UQ Setup.
At this hang my UQ was great at 8C,
the next night the temp dropped to 4C and so did the UQ
    (about 4 cm under me).
Last winter when i did a hang at -20C the UQ did a massive drop.
What happens is that the shock cord gets less elastic in the cold.
Gonna search the forum later on solutions and put the links here.
Someone with more time , can do the same
It might be a real challenge for us fly boys to get under 20Kg
We just have to remember the sound effects, remember ?
If you guys think i will leave my BENZINE stove at home, your nuts

    I will probably go with:
WB Traveler (here i am thinking, less is more) (i will try to sleep as free (no tarp) as the weather permits)
    WM Puma as sleeping bag.
    WB winter Yeti as UQ
A small CCF for my feet.
And some sort of full length pad as backup.
    Down booties
    Warm gloves
    Black Rock Hat
    Serious Innovation Extreme Masque
    Wool undergarment
    A really powerful flashlight

What i probably need to look into:
    Really Warm foot ware
    Extra pair of warm gloves
It would be cool to have a temp logger (mine can't handle those temps),
has anyone got any ideas here ?
Upper body Isolation for sitting still.
Last winter we did a -8c 1 night hike and found out it is pretty cold to sit even if there is a fire.

Try experimenting with some thin silicone tubing, itīs very stretchy even at low temps and doenst seem to have the "memory" normal(latex?) elastics suffer from.

    About transports:
I have a bigger car also (7 seats) so I can probably pick up 5 people with gear at the airport. Please, skip Luleå, itīs 250km.....
Check flights to Arvidsjaur, thatīs the closest one (itīs the same flight as Lycksele).

    About sleeping:
I will try out if it works to sleep with reindeerskins insida the hammock. Nothing isolates better than reindeerskins (except polarbeer) so that can be a solution. If that works out fine I will see if I can get more reinskins.

    About shoes:
Try to get watertight boots since there could be water on the lake. If itīs snows a lot the snow will put pressure on the ice and water will be pressed up ON the ice. Not so nice to get wet shoes if itīs -25.....

    About freezing:
As said, if it gets too cold we can go inside and make a fire. Then we will get plus degrees and freezing is no longer a problem.

    About moving:
If itīs a lot of snow it will be problems walking. I will try to see how many pair of skies I can bring. The skies will fit to normal boots so you donīt have to bring any special skiingboots. Would be nice to watch our danish friends ski down the slopes...

Iīve only been skiing once(Ulricehamn i think) My "very" nice co-workers lured me down their most difficult slope as a first run, and..... well a group of young snowboarders had the laugh of their life, as a 6.4 feet tall dane was litteratly cartwheelin down the slopes But great fun i like a good challenge
