Hang event at Pine Grove Furnace SP, PA

ZQ and I are camping at PGF SP this weekend and took the opportunity to stop by the AT Museum located within the park. I had a great chat with Larry Luxemborg, I believe he's initiated the organization of the museum. It is a very well done, displaying Avery, MacKaye, Grandma Gatewood, Earl Shaffer, Gene Espy, just to mention a few. There is even the original Earl Shaffer shelter reconstructed inside.

While talking with Larry and sharing about hammock hanging and the effects it has had on my camping experience, he has offered to coordinate a "hang" at PGF hoping to use it as an educational event. He was real interested in the development of hammock style camping and would appreciate us considering a hang at PGF.

I told him of the hang coming up in October in Gathland SP. He is interested in a spring 2011 date. Sometime late April, early May...before Traildays for sure.

I'm hoping to be at the October hang and will bring up the idea there also. If we have sufficient interest...and I'm sure we will...I need to supply Larry with some dates so he can begin the process of reserving the group camping areas for the hang.

I think this is a good location for a Mahha hang if not just for a local PA hang.

Feedback appreciated. I'll be contacting him in the next couple of weeks.

Sounds great to me! Took a quick look at the PGF SP website and it looks nice. Saw a picture of the museum that had a picture of Grandma Gatewood in it!

It would be even greater if we could actually meet ZQ to make sure she exists while we were there... any chance?

If you've never been there, Pine Grove Furnace State Park is BE U TI FUL!! There's an old (charcoal making?) furnace in it, but the real draw is the museum, the AT and the gorgeous forest. There are awesome privately owned log cabins around the outside. I also remember a fantastic dry-stacked rock wall dating to the 1800s in the park that should not be missed. If you can make this hang, you won't ever regret it!

That would be real cool. I've been to Pine Grove a number of times but never the museum.

I've been there a few times for the PA Ruck but never hanged there. There are no trees at the Hostel and the campsites were a blazin' party late into the night. Check out the Group Campground and see if there's enough to hang us there.
I've hung at the shelter area just south of the Hostel (I forget the name of it). That has two shelters by the stream.
People can spend the night at the Hostel bunks or get a shower there as an alternative. There's quite a few trails at Pine Grove. Or take a drive or bike on the forest roads, some are dirt roads.WoodChuck's Halfway milepost marker is there at the park. It's real close to Gettysburg for the sightseers.

We are taking our scout troop to Pine Grove SP in October. I can't wait. I am trying to convince as many leaders and scouts as possible to use a hammock. They are skeptics still, but I'll keep working them!
