Thanks to everyone for the replies. I haven't completely destroyed them yet, but I think I'll have the old man take them to the machine shop where he works, I'm pretty sure they have the resources and they'll be bored enough to fix'em'up. If not, I'll just use the "buck" or Siberian knots to tie it up until I can get some new straps ordered.

I'm pretty sure the hacksaw will not cut the metal hooks very well,If they are ratchet straps used to ratchet loads down. The hooks are hardened steel,(heat treated) so they wont bend or get "sheered" by the force of the ratchet.
If you are going to cut the hooks off you need to cut them with a grinding wheel. You can try the saw but I'm betting it will just glide over the steel without cutting it very well. I just did the same here. I ended cutting them off with a grinder.
But give it a try first. Its the same as trying to cut a master lock with a saw. It just don't cut it. tuff stuff.

Already tried the hacksaw, and, as suspected, it failed miserably.

I have already thought of that, just don't have one. Might end up getting one.

Crazy what we do in search of the "perfect-hammock-setup"!

I have used my Dremel a gazillion times and couldn't live without it. I cut the hooks off a pair of 15' ratchet straps ($8) from Wally world.

I tie overhand loops in the ends of my webbing rather than using sewn loops. The structure of an overhand loop knot in webbing is the same as the water knot -- the preferred knot to use when tying two pieces of webbing together. Just be aware that the water knot will slip a very little bit each time it is loaded, so make sure you tie a tail at least 4" long, and you check it each time before you use it. I have found that untying the overhand loop/water knot in my webbing (as opposed to cord) is relatively easy. I just grab the ends coming out of the knot and smoosh and wiggle them back into the knot. It loosens up after a few seconds.
