It'll be interesting to see how the durability is. I have to believe that the scrim covering of IX adds at least a little durability. Possibly, with somewhat gentle handling(which is how I try to treat my stuff anyway) the unfaced foam will be good enough.
Benefits all around - less cost, lighter weight. A winning combo!

I too have been saving the thin sheets from recieved packed items. So, will incorporate them into my anorak project, which will have 3 layers of the IX I had till I ran out, and the rest I will make with the PE scraps. Thanks so much for this post. If Insultex is what the manufacturer says, and, it becomes available to the construction industry, it will be selling dirt cheap at Home Depot, and, be blowing all over construction sites nation wide.
Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.

Here's the first 3/4 PEF UQ, weighing in at 8.5 oz using a WalMart nylon outer covering and 1.1 ripstop inner covering. It behaves just like an IX UQ. Thing1 used it last night, and said, "It's very warm!"
I'm thinking of ordering some spinnaker material to go with PEF, as an intermediate step before trying cuben!

Don't the little pockets created by the quilted scrim on IX contribute to the material's inusulative value?

IMHO, 1/32" PEF is a good bit thicker than the PE layer in Insultex. That's where the real resistance to heat transfer is... inside the foam.
During lunch, I asked my friend Dave, who has helped me make many IX UQs, to tell me which of two UQs has IX, and which has PEF. He picked the wrong one! They are very difficult to tell apart, once they are encased in nylon.

If this stuff is strong enough, do you need both sides faced? Or are you doing that mainly for aesthetic value?
Is this the same stuff? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...702&marketID=9

You obviously have some good people on the board.
It's certainly breathable through the needle holes; otherwise, I think it is no more breathable than other PE foam sheet. In any case, one wonders how a closed-cell foam can be breathable without collapsing...
The biggest liability with the 1/32 Lightweight PE Foam that I'm using is a tear. I would not use it without both sides faced.
Yes, but likely thicker and heavier. Might not need both sides faced.
Yep, it's all PE foam, but most of it is thicker than 1/32", and heavier.
