    Bay Area newbies

Well I have convinced my husband to give hammock camping a try.

I have an eno doublenest and we'll do mosquito netting and a tarp. Planning to use our exped mat inside, at least the first time, and we'll each try a night or two in it before purchasing another full setup.

I have a question though for n.cal people. How do you know if the park will allow hammock camping? I have only seen Big Basin prohibiting it, but I would hate to get there and get set up and be told we couldn't hang.

    Thanks!

Big Basin prohibits hammocks? I combed their website and couldn't find anything that outlaws hammocks... guess I should call before i take off for Skyline to Sea next week.

    Welcome to the forum!

I usually just go hammocking. I've hung in Yosemite, Sequoia/Kings Canyon and many of the state parks without issues. As long as I don't try to hang from sequoias in SEKI I seem to be okay.

Yep. It is in this PDF. Page 1 under plants and flowers. I hung my eno in Calaveras Big Trees this weekend and no one said a word.

    Welcome,

I am in San Leandro. I've got a HH and love it. I didn't know Big Basin prohibited hammocks either. EBRPD has no problems with them, and Henry Coe allows them also.

    Happy hanging.

Welcome from "sacatomatoe".. I now avoid all state parks because of the crazy rules(which are not consistent) and because they are too expensive. Most seem run down, understaffed, and over rated! How said that I have to feel this way, considering I grew up camping in the state parks. The good news is the Sierras are loaded with trees and very little to NO rules! Get a Forrest map pick area and have at it. But remember ..."leave No Trace"!

Yeah good question, I think it's a good idea to call the park or forest service first. I have usually found them to be helpful and very knowlegable about current policy.

Your concern is valid. For instance, "Sugarloaf ridge state park" in Sonoma County bans hanging from trees, citing the spread of sudden oak disease as the reason. I was asked to take my hammock down while camping there a couple of months ago. Instead, I suspended my hammock between a boulder and the car. I did concede to take down my hammock chair. Even hanging a clothesline or tarp between trees was forbidded in this park.

I much prefer hanging in state forests rather than state parks anyway, partly because there are less restrictions.

Welcome to HF glad to hear the hammock bug has bit. Now lets hope that it bites your husband as well. I also wish you luck in finding a place to hang.

A couple of years ago I hammock car camped for a month throughout Northern CA and was never questioned. I used both state parks and national forests etc. If you qualify...get a National Parks Access pass...it cuts the fee in half. It covers most public lands but unfortunately not state parks.
