Yeah that works really great! Good way to teach them respect for fire.. hopefully he won't find a lighter and burn down the house, because he knows that fire can be dangerous.

My son is already skilled in the art of building fires and he automatically starts collecting firewood as soon as the camp is set - no need to tell him

Hopefully he won't be fed up the whole camping thing when he gets older - he's actually a great little hiking/camping partner!

Daughter is 4 now. Shell be 5 when her first trip rolls around. I had to wait for Mom to be comfortable with me taking her out in the wild with just the 2 of us for 3-7 days.

Andrew was 4 on his first trip, and that may have soured him as we spent most of the time driving due to poor planning on the individual leading the group.

Yeah my wife was more than reluctant to let me bring my son on the first trips... she's still scared that something might happen (ticks and all the killers that roam the wood at night ).

So far he has only been with me on overnighters, but next season will be different

It didnt help on one of our trips my wife was telling Andrew about bears. Then as we are getting settled into the hammocks for the night, the yotes start talking less than 200 yds away. He was done after that. Spent that night in the truck!!!

The good thing is he is always tired at nite. Usually goes to sleep within 5 minutes!!

Andrew did get a leach on his ankle from Lake Superior on our most recent trip. First time and he was quite calm ( to my surprise) as I removed it with a knife.

Shug.... Candy AND Cocoa??? LOL!! Might as well give them a sugar IV drip!! We have done our best to limit to every extent possible extra sugar intake. As as a result they are very sensitive to any extra they get. I know when Andrew has had extra and if he has it less than 4 hours before bedtime it isnt happening!!
