    Thru hiker Quilt Kit?

Hey just got back from my most recent wheeling trip, totally awesome. I got a chance to test out my new UQ I made. I was warm till it got below 40* I decided I need something better. I was looking at the This kit from Thru Hiker.

The way I see it I only need to buy some grossgain and cord locks with some materials I have here at home I can make my own down UQ (please let me know if you guys down think it does). as well as a top quilt for a fraction of the cost to buy one. (Sorry everyone who is making a living on making gear I need the money for Jeep mods).

That said couple questions. How is the delivery time from them I know may of you DIYers buy stuff from them. Anyone used this kit?

Should I get 6 more oz. of down 3 each for the top and bottom quilts? I am planning doing 11-7" baffles 3.75" tall 45" wide and 84" long for the total length.

    Ok i'll bite

to be honest....if you shop around...you can amke a TQ for less then the Thru hiker kit

here is a list of stuff

    Stormcrow down $6.50 an oz x 10 =$65
    Camo 1.4oz ripstop from stormcrow $3.50 a yard x 5 = 17.50

    thats 82.50
cord locks and line you can get really cheap anywhere....

so i think it's cheaper to buy everything from other places....then to buy the thru hiker kit
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I've not used that particular kit, but I've never had any problems ordering from Thru-Hiker. Service has always been fine and delivery is usually quick.

You should order more than 6 extra ounces of down if you plan on using these quilts in any kind of cool weather. My lightest down quilt that is intended as 3-season uses 10oz of 900fp down. It's fine for the warmer side of fall and spring, but not real effective beyond, say, 40 degrees.

You're going to be putting in the work, no reason to short yourself on the most important material.

    Ok great info.

the Kit comes with 12 oz. each of down so and extra 3 each would total 15 oz. thats a total of 30 oz. of down. thats 165.00 plus 125~ for the cloth + grossgain and cord locks. Sounds like a better deal to me thank you guys.

Does 15oz. sound better for going down to about 20* I plan on doing a full 7' long bottom quilt and top quilt. After spending all evening reading I decided I want to try a Karo quilt for top and bottom.

This may be helpful as a point of reference. (Information is "borrowed" from Stormcrow's website)

Specs for the Hammock Gear 3-season full length UQ (the Incubator).

    WEIGHT 22.5 oz (w/stuff sack & suspension)
    SIZE 78″ long × 44″ wide (188 × 111 cm)
FILL 12 oz of 900-fill down
    BAFFLES 9 x 2" Differential
    LOFT 3.5″
    RATING* 20°F (-7°C)

Note: This information is for 900-fill down. You'd need more down if using 800 or 850 fill.

15oz of down should get you to 20 comfortably.
