Some things I have been thinking about...
How many hangers carry hammocks on day hikes? I have been taking my GT ultralight. Do you take tarps, too?
How does this integrate into you "10 essentials" list?
How large a capacity is your daypack? I bet many of you guys have several you choose from depending on your trip plan.
Kinda tossing some of these out there for you guys to gnaw on.

I carry a tarp on day hikes + a medical adventure survival bivy,extra fleece, two days of food, sm med kit etc. On day paddles i take my hammock for little afternoon naps.

If it's going to be more than 6 miles or so, I bring a napping hammock.
I frequently carry a tarp even if I don't carry a hammock on dayhikes. Summer means afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains.

Just like you said, size of pack depends on lots of factors.

Have 8x10 nylon tarp I carry and emergency blanket will take the hammock along if I plan on spending the day and want a cesta
If there's a chance for me to hang, I bring the hammock. I've brought to a local lake beach. I regularly bring it to work and eat lunch in it out in the woods.

I always bring a light hammock when my wife comes along. After a couple of miles I set her up for a nap and I keep going to my destination at bit quicker pace.

I bring a hammock and tarp on my hikes. A hammock is really the best way to rest even if its only for 10 or 15 minutes. It takes under a minute to set up and far more preferable than sitting on a log or on the ground. Obviously a tarp is always handy for sun or rain protection.
I usually always bring at least my Nano7 with whoopies. It weighs nothing and is probably smaller than my fist.
I like to sit down and have a lunchBREAK (a full on siesta, if the group is cool with it.) It's nice to sit comfortably and really relax your feet for a while. I don't mind sitting on a log for a minute, but that isn't relaxing!
I have a small (about 55 cu. in.) daypack that I take on "strolls through the woods", but for more roudy trips, I take my Osprey Atmos 50 and with a real hammock and tarp. Lately, if my wife is with me (and she usually is) we take one pack that will fit both us us well enough and switch off... or not.
10 essentials?? Bring whatever you want; as long as I don't have to carry it out.

I usually dont but have been considering getting an ENO or Grand Turk, or maybe fiddling with a light 1 layer DIY hammock just for this purpose and porchin'
I just started carrying a hammock for my day hikes as I got a larger back back. My old day pack was just a little too small to carry a hammock/tarp and food/stove/water.
I do take a hammock or two along on any car trips I make out of town for just in case situations (just in case I find a chance to use the hammock)
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
