About to make whoopie slings, have a few questions.

I'm planning to make some whoopie slings for an October hang, and have a few questions.
    1. What size (diameter?) amsteel do I need? I have seen 1/8", 1/4", etc.
    2. Do you have to tie a knot at the hammock end of the whoopie to hold it in place, and keep it from slipping?

In every video I see, this isn't mentioned, and I never see any way of securing it.

Would I be correct in assuming that the part where the amsteel goes through itself is free-moving when not under a load, but tightens down, and creates enough friction to stay in place when under load?

    Thanks!

p.s.- WOW that was hard to try to put into words, hopefully you guys will understand my gibberish!

I use 7/64 so any of what you mention will work.

You should either tie or bury and form a larkshead to attach to the hammock.

When not under pressure, the bury is pretty easy to move, but you do still need to bunch it a little from the pulling end.

1/4" will be a little excessive for hammock use. 7/64 or 1/8" is fine (and a lot cheaper).
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

By "bury", do you mean the part where the end of the amsteel goes "through" itself?

    1) 7/64 is plenty. Some like the security (mental) of the 1/8.

    2) No back up knot is needed. Once you have your hang height/distance set, milk the bury so its not bunched up and get in. It does work on constriction. When you weight the cord the outer section constricts on the inner section and locks it tight. Like a chinese finger trap.

That's what I have been assuming, but I wanted to make sure. One trip to the ground was enough "fun" for once in a lifetime.

    Thanks opie!
