I live in Sarasota, and I plan on stealth hanging in Fl. state parks this winter. It's way to hot to even go outside in summer. This past spring I kayaked to small islands in Sarasota bay and hammocked overnight w/ great success. My son and I will be camping w/ the cub scouts this winter and we will be hanging one way or the other.

Just a heads-up jkm; technically, hanging a hammock is against the rules in Florida State Parks. If they see you, they're (or were 3 years ago when I lived there) pretty consistent about telling you to take it down. Stealth is your best option in the State Parks.
    Trust nobody!

JKM--the summer as not as miserable as you might imagine--especially if you are "seasoned" already! I dont doubt Cannibal--but as he said, they have to see you, and that may be a long shot. In any event, it is a stupid rule and reflecting a concern other than hammocks I am sure. We may want to organize on this one! And at any rate many of the best places are outside the State Park system. People love the Ocala Forest, my little family has been covering the virtually submerged Withalacoochee Forest this last month in a few overnight hikes. WHere were you planning on going this winter? Maybe we need to make a Florida Hang if one does not yet exist......

My number one choice would be Ocala National forest, Florida trail area. Myaka River state park is the closest to me. There should be a Florida group hang.

There is a Youtube video of a guy who did a nice 20 something mile trip in the Myaka. I have never been down that way, but the trail looked beautiful. The fact that the guy set off with over 50 pounds in his pack was terrifying though. I have been kicking my *** to get my dry pack down to about 17 pounds. More or less there, as long as it does not get cold! Let's being to put out the call for a Florida Hang. If we do it right, all kinds of non-Floridians will come along just to enjoy the warm. February say for example?

Me, waiting on a WBBB just ordered. If it gets here in time, I'm in for a Hang most anywhere in Florida.
Would be coming UP from Ft. Myers. I'm assuming the "Hang" would be north of Ft. Myers. The sound of an event in Ocala National forest sounds like a winner to me.

Put me on the list to be there.
