Would this work for a tree hugger/cinch buckle?

I was lurking around and came across this from another thread.
    http://www.strapworks.com/Flat_Nylon...ng_p/fnw38.htm
Would this work as a tree hugger that also runs to my 2 smc rings for suspension?
I was thinking of sewing a loop in one end, hooking a small biener or dutch clip and running the other end into my rings.
I know they have several sizes and I was looking at this because it should weigh less than 1/2".
Any issue with this size holding in the rings? I guess a quick half hitch could prevent that.

Would this stretch like polypro straps?

Nylon stretches, and IMO 3/8" is getting narrow enough that I'd be concerned that it wouldn't spread the stress enough to protect the tree, which is the whole point. I use 8' of 1" on each side because the trees are big around here. The are pretty light.

Being nylon it will stretch worse than polypro. Polypro will stretch but will eventually quit after a few hangs. Nylon will stretch and shrink back ready to stretch out again and again and again. You may save a few grams going to smaller than 1 inch but that potential to appear to harm the tree is greater. There are better places to save on weight than straps... in my opinion any way.

****, I thought I read that polypro would stretch more than flat nylon. Must have read that wrong.
So you are telling me that this type of material would work?

If so, that is good news cause I have several of these laying around that could be put to good use after removing the buckle

Those tie-down straps should do just fine.

Note that REI states that the "loop" break strength is 1400 lbs. If I am interpreting that correctly, that only applies when the strap is doubled over, i.e. in it's loop formation. If this is true, then each side of the loop has a 700 lb. break strength. Therefore, a single run of this strap has 1/2 of the 1400 lbs.

    This is only my interpretation

Strapworks will sew the loops for you, if you're not so inclined.

I usually get 1" poly straps in the "by the foot" place at REI and sew them myself.
